The Bennett School Media Center serves 237 students, Pre-K through Eighth grades. Our school has eight classroom teachers and is staffed by 25 other school personnel. Our school is located in a small rural community, in which many of the families have lived in the area most of their lives. The parents and community members are supportive of our school and are involved in our endeavors and overall mission.
Our library is about 1000 sq. ft. of student learning space and incorporates a jungle theme. Murals and signage were created by the local high school art teacher. The media center was remodeled in 2010, adding new carpet, paint, and shelving. This endeavor included a major weeding of outdated materials. The media center has a media production room, which serves as both a student work area for multimedia projects and a small group meeting space for both students and teachers. The Professional Resources library is located in this room. There is an additional teacher workroom, technology storage room, and an office for librarian use. The technology specialist, who works at our school once a week, has a workspace in this area. The media center has an Easy book section and a story time area with a brightly colored carpet that matches the jungle theme. The fiction section is located between the Easy section and Nonfiction sections. The paperback books are located in the Fiction section and shelved separately because of frequent use and tendency to show wear. A four-computer workstation for students provides access to the OPAC and Internet and is frequently used throughout the day. The media center also has 4 laptop carts for whole class instruction, which may be checked out by classroom teachers.
Through PTA fundraising, library fundraising, and book fairs, money has been raised to purchase an large electric screen, projector, AppleTV, and iPad for the media center. The library media center strives to be equipped with the newest technologies. There is seating at tables that accommodates up to 38 patrons. Besides media classes, this area is often scheduled for large group meetings and presentations for both students and teachers. In the Reference and Periodical sections of the library, there is comfortable seating that offers a place for patrons to enjoy reading.
The Bennett School Media Center has a warm and welcoming atmosphere that fosters a love for reading and the quest for learning.
