The Book Fair is a biannual event that takes place in the Fall and Spring of the school year. Before I became the media coordinator, our school did not have a regular book fair event. One of the teachers would sponsor a small book fair in her classroom and use the funds to support classroom needs. Now, the book fair is a big event, in which much of the community participates. Because there is not a nearby public library or bookstore, our school library provides many of our community's reading needs. Many families who homeschool their children visit our bookfair.

The Young Authors (YA) Celebration is the culminating activity that celebrates the efforts of the participants in the annual Young Authors Competition. We host an author each year, speaks to all of the students in the school about the importance of reading and the process of writing books. Parents and community members are invited to attend the celebration. In addition, the students who submitted books to the competition are invited to a reception, in which they enjoy refreshments and time with the author. The winners of the YA competition are invited to a special event at the Barn at Fearrington, where they are recognized for their writing accomplishment and received a signed copy of a book from the key note speaker/author.

Our school supports both the Elementary School Battle of the Books (EBoB) and Middle School Battle of the Books (MBoB). The purpose of the Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading and to exposed students to quality literature. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. As soon as the BoB list is posted, the students begin preparing for the next year's competition. We enjoyed meeting each day at lunch and after school to discuss the books. This year our EBob team placed 1st in the county competition.

The Accelerated Reading Program is used in grades 2-8. The library media program promotes reading by offering incentives for reading if students meet their goals each nine weeks. The first nine weeks, students participated in a movie and hot chocolate reward, where they could bring a pillow and wear pajamas. The second nine weeks, the students participated in a dance party with fun music and snacks. For the third nine weeks, the students meeting their goals will be invited to a ice cream fudge cake social. At the end of the year, we have an AR Auction, in which all of the reading points are converted to AR dollars. I collect and solicit prizes throughout the year for this grand event. The excitement and motivation for reading has increased since we added the incentives.
